Mission

A domestic, not-for-profit organization founded in 1974, the Sound Beach Civic Association is dedicated to advancing activities that improve the quality of life in Sound Beach:

  • We work with local, county, and state officials to identify those projects best suited for our hamlet.
  • We collect donations for local food pantries at each of our meetings. Each year, during the holiday season, we sponsor two families, one from St. Louis De Montfort, one from the Sound Beach Community Church, as well as donate to a Veterans home.
  • We showcase local businesses at our meetings.
  • We host annual candidate debates/forums.
  • We acted as liaison between the Town of Brookhaven and the community throughout the planning and implementation of the traffic calming project.
  • Starting in 2009 through 2016 each year we awarded scholarships to Sound Beach high school students.
  • In 2009 we installed a garden of remembrance at the Vets Memorial. In 2012 we installed plaques for the seven fallen of Sound Beach.
  • In 2011 we were instrumental in getting the traffic signal installed at Echo and New York Avenues.
  • We encourage responsible pet ownership and in 2012 hosted the first annual Pet Adopt-A-Thon.
  • In 2012 we were instrumental in getting six decorative streetlamps installed on New York Avenue.
  • In 2012, working with the police, we were instrumental in closing down a drug house.
  • In 2012, working with the Highway Department, we were instrumental in getting the street sweeping dumpsite next to Hartlin’s moved and now maintain the garden there.
  • In 2012 a community development block grant was approved to replace the worn “Welcome to Sound Beach” sign near Handy Pantry and a new sign was

    installed in 2016.

  • In 2016, working with Councilwoman Jane Bonner and Superintendent of Highway Dan Losquadro, the revitalization of Echo Avenue was completed from North Country Road to New York Avenue and the roadway repaved through Lower Rocky Point Road.
  • In 2017 we secured a downtown beautification grant from State Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo and installed a new “Welcome to Sound Beach” sign on North Country Road as well as plantings throughout Sound Beach.
